Melodisto FAQs
What is Melodisto?
At it's core, Melodisto.com offers a video conferencing and other features that make remote lessons even better than in-person lessons. Other features include, a shared virtual music stand, document sharing, audio/video recording as well as superior audio quality. It also allows teachers to remote control the audio enhancement options on the student's computer.
Is Melodisto really free?
Melodisto is absolutely free for regular students and individual teachers. Music schools can also use it for free, but have the option to license access to our APIs in order to connect Melodisto to their learning management system.
How can I onboard my students
The straightest way to onboard your students is to point them to this page and have them watch this 60 seconds video
Do I need to install software or buy specific hardware?
Unlike with Zoom or Skype, you don't need to install anything as Melodisto runs in your browser.
You don't necessarily need any particular hardware as most computers are equipped with camera and microphone. However after doing a lot of research on audio quality, we concluded that the best way to optimize audio quality is buying a quality microphone.
How are remote-lessons better than in-person lessons?
Compared to taking music lessons in-person, there are a number of benefits to remote lessons, such as:
A student's choice of what instrument they can learn is no longer limited by what teachers are available in their area.
No commute for teacher or student (or the student’s parents)
Teachers don't need to make their studio (and bathroom) accessible to students
Teachers can work across time zones and balance out peak times
Pandemic-safe and child-abuse safe
All these benefits only materialize as long as teachers use a technology that doesn't feel like a "settle for less solution" - which is exactly why we built Melodisto.
Why are lessons via Melodisto better than lessons via Zoom, Skype or Google Meet, etc.?
While Zoom, Skype or Google Meet, etc. are designed for people talking online, Melodisto is designed for teaching and practicing music online. Melodisto offers better audio-quality and helpful features such as a shared music stand, real-time lesson notes, a remote piano, an activity history (and more features to follow).
Also, we designed Melodisto so the student has to click only one button at the scheduled time, as opposed to click on a particular zoom link or having to add you to a friends list first. Our design mantra is, that teachers and students want to use every minute for their lesson for studying rather than troubleshooting or configuration.
Why are lessons via Melodisto even more effective and inspiring than in-person lessons?
Besides giving music teachers everything to make it feel like an in-person lesson, Melodisto adds extra capabilities that make teaching and practicing more effective. Examples are:
Teachers can share sheet music electronically (going paperless), eliminating the hassle of dealing with paper.
Teachers can digitally record demos and tips during lessons so students can replay them later.
Teachers can explain music theory with the built in soft-keyboard.
Students can record themselves which is known to lead to a steeper learning curve.
Students have a complete history of lessons with lessons notes, demo recordings, their own recordings, practice time, sheet music
Parents can track and monitor their kids practicing discipline and progress
Can I share sheet music via Melodisto?
As a user of Melodisto you have agreed to our terms and conditions. In general, it means that you can only share sheet music with your students that is (a) in the public domain or (b) created by yourself or (c) short snippets of copyrighted work in the realm of "fair use" (exceptions might apply).
Students are also allowed to scan/upload sheet music they have legally acquired and open it (but not share) during a lesson with a teacher.
Can I only sign up with a Google or Facebook account?
For security reasons, you can only sign up and log in with your Gmail of Facebook account. At some point we might support other log in methods.
How stable is Melodisto's video conferencing?
Short answer: as stable as your Internet connection.
Long answer: Obviously, an uninterrupted video conferencing is key for an effective music lesson. The crux is, like all other real-time web applications, Melodisto depends on a stable Internet connection (notice that's not about speed, rather than the "package loss rate").
On a positive note, Melodisto is designed to handle unstable Internet connections very gracefully. E.g. if the connection flakes out and the call is interrupted, it will automatically reconnect without any action needed from the user. So all you have to do in such an event is wait for a few seconds.
How can I send a calendar invite to my students?
Short answer: We recommend to send them this link: https://app.melodisto.com - because the student would just have to enter your email address to join the lesson. The page "remembers" the teacher's email after the first time, so joining a lesson is just a matter of clicking one button.
Long answer: as a Teacher, you might be used to sending a link to your Zoom room to your student. Likewise, in Melodisto, each teacher their distinct "room ID" based on the teacher's email address (e.g. https://app.melodisto.com/trumpet555@gmail.com). This URL can be shared with a student (e.g. in a calendar invite).
